TAX PAYER SUES BAUCHI GOV OVER ILLEGAL COLLECTION OF TAXES IN LOCAL COUNCIL

A tax payer and resident of Bauchi local government area of Bauchi stateShehu Musa has dragged the state Governor Mohammed Abubakar to the Bauchi state high court 3 over alleged illegal collection of taxes in the local government.
Speaking with newsmen on Wednesday shortly after the first hearing on the case, counsel to the plaintiff Barrister Hussaini Saraki said his client was suing the state governor for allegedly engaging a consultancy firm known as ‘Kaskada Consultants’ to be collecting taxes from the local government arguing that by so doing, the local government council was deprived of its right ‘as the taxes belongs to her’.

He added that the suit was aimed at getting a restraining order from the court that would stop the state government and the consultants to stop the collection of such revenues belonging to the local government.

” Section 1 (1), section 2 (1) and section 7 of the 1999 constitution empowers local governments to be collecting taxes in their localities as their internal revenues not the state government”. He claimed.
Responding to the suit on the floor of the court, counsel to the dependents Barrister Imrana Muhammad requested the court to adjourn hearing to enable him and his clients have ample time to prepare for the case which both parties agreed.
Our correspondent reports that the judge entertaining the case Justice Hamidu Kunaza having listened to the prayers of both parties adjourned hearing to January next year.
