Paul Merson has told Manchester United to make a big-money bid to sign Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal this summer.

The 28-year-old’s future has been a relentless source of speculation this summer due to the fact that he has less than 12 months left to run on his current Arsenal contract.

Arsenal appear to still be hoping to be able to tie Sanchez down to a new contract at The Emirates but there appears not to have been any progress on that front in the last few months.

Manchester United are believed to be on the lookout for one more signing this summer ahead of transfer deadline day at the end of the month.

And former Arsenal star Merson believes that Manchester United should capitalise on the uncertainty about Sanchez’s future and make a move to sign the Chilean this month.

Merson told the Daily Star: “Manchester United should make a bid of more than £50m for Alexis Sanchez because he could bring them the title.”

He continued: “I didn’t fancy United at the start of the season.

“But if they got Sanchez, I would. He would make a massive difference.

“Arsenal won’t sell him to a rival for £50m but if United offered £60m or £70m he goes. United can afford it as well.

“They would get most of it back in shirt sales.

“They’re one of the biggest clubs in the world and their club shop is the size of a shopping centre. They should go for him.”

Manchester United have signed three new players so far this summer, after having tied up deals for Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic.

The Red Devils are preparing for a return to the Champions League group stage next month after their Europa League triumph last season.
