Liverpool are still hopeful of concluding a deal to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer, say reports
Liverpool are still in the race to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer, according to reports in the British media.
The Liverpool Echo is reporting that Van Dijk remains as the Reds’ top summer transfer target this summer despite claims over the weekend that the defender had agreed a move to Manchester City.
The same report states that Liverpool are ready to “smash” their transfer record to land the 25-year-old defender and are prepared to make him their highest-paid player.
The story also claims that Liverpool are confident that Van Dijk will buy into Jurgen Klopp’s long-term vision at Anfield as he looks to steer the Reds to a title challenge next season.
Should Liverpool compete a deal for Van Dijk, it would make him their second official signing of the summer after the Reds announced a move to sign Dominic Solanke from Chelsea when his contract expires with the Blues.
Liverpool are hoping to use the lure of Champions League football to sign some top players this summer after Klopp led his side to a fourth-placed finish this season.
