Roy Evans has urged Liverpool to sign a top defender in the mould of Jamie Carragher this summer
Liverpool need to sign a defender in the mould of Jamie Carragher this summer, according to Roy Evans.
The Reds have been linked with a host of players this summer but have so far only brought in three new faces: Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Dominic Solanke.
Liverpool’s defending was called into question last weekend when Jurgen Klopp’s men conceded three goals in their 3-3 draw with Watford at Vicarage Road in their Premier League opener.
The Merseyside club are thought to still be on the lookout for a number of signings this summer as Klopp prepares for his second full season in charge at the club.
And former Liverpool man Evans has left no doubt about what position needs strengthening at Anfield before the end of the month.
Speaking in an interview with talkSPORT, Evans said: “They need somebody like a Jamie Carragher, someone who verbally puts people in their places, pulls people together.
“I don’t know if the Virgil van Dijk lad is really verbal and is an organiser but if we were to have that sort of player, it would make a massive difference to the team.”
Liverpool are now preparing for their first home Premier League game of the season, a clash against Crystal Palace at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds, who finished fourth in the Premier League last term, took a step towards the group stage of the Champions League by beating Hoffenheim 2-1 in the first leg of their play-off clash in Germany on Tuesday night.
