The Manchester United manager says Victor Lindelof will prove him with an additional option in defence
Jose Mourinho believes new signing Victor Lindelof will add some depth to the Manchester United squad.
The Sweden international became the Red Devils’ first signing of the 2017 summer transfer window on Wednesday afternoon after the defender completed his medical at Carrington.
The 22-year-old has put pen to paper on a long-term deal with Manchester United after the Europa League winners agreed a reported £30.7m fee with Portuguese champions Benfica.
Centre-halves Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling have all struggled with injuries during the 2016-17 season to leave Mourinho short at the back.
Speaking to Manchester United’s website about Lindelof, Mourinho offered an insight into what he believes the defender will bring to the Red Devils side.
“Victor is a very talented young player, who has a great future ahead of him at United,” Mourinho said.
“Our season last year showed us that we need options and quality to add depth to the squad and Victor is the first to join us this summer.
“I know that our fantastic group of players will welcome him as one of us.”
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term.
However, Mourinho led the Red Devils to the EFL Cup and the Europa League in his first season in charge at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013.
