Worried by the high rate of unmarried ladies and divorcees in the north especially among the Hausa/Fulanis, the Bauchi based cultural group ‘Hausa/Fulani Youths Development and Orientation [HAFYDO] has appealed to Hausa/fulani men to be marrying only within the ethnic group.
Chairman of the organization Alhaji Musa Muhammad Dambam made this appeal on Saturday at a Ramadan dinner organized by HAFYDO for its members and working Journalists in the state held at the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists [NUJ], Bauchi.
Dambam who explained that the group was established with the set objective of promoting culture and tradition of the hausa/ fulani in the state lamented that hausa/fulani girls that used to marry early in the past now marry ‘very late while others remain singled forever due to the rampant cases of divorce and other marital squabbles’ among spouses within the ethnic group. These according to him made ‘their men’ to be marrying from other tribes.
He said HAFYDO which was so concerned about the rate of matured singled women and divorcees among the tribe had organized series of sensitization workshops, seminars and public lectures in parts of the state with a view to re-orienting the participants and alleviating matrimonial problems in the society.
” We thank Allah that our women have now changed positively. In our group alone, we have about 500 registered singled ladies who have no serious suitors. Therefore, let our lads marry from them and those who have only one wives should add more in order to reduce the population of singled ladies and divorcees”. He pleaded.
Dambam called on the society to eschew some unnecessary practices and formalities that make marriage too costly for the youths cautioning that if the women remained without husbands, politicians might use them in campaigns and dump them after elections.
In his remarks, the chairman Bauchi state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists [NUJ], Alhaji Ibrahim Malam Goje expressed appreciation to HAFYDO for organizing the feast for journalists assuring that his members would help in publicizing the activities of the organization.
